Local Community Member’s Kiltwalk Success

Local community member, Lorraine Andrew, 67, from Blantyre, successfully completed the Big Stroll at this year’s Glasgow Kiltwalk on 30th April 2023 and raised over £470.00 in donations for The Haven – a local charity that provides free supportive services to individuals, families and carers affected by a life-limiting illness.

The Kiltwalk is Scotland’s largest mass participation walking event and this year 14,000 ‘Kiltwalk Heroes’ stepped out to raise millions of pounds for 856 different Scottish charities. The Haven being one of them.

Lorraine was excited to take part in the event to raise vital funds for the local charity and has been a long-standing supporter and advocate of The Haven.

She said: “It was a fantastic day! I met so many different people raising funds for all different types of charities.

My family was there to cheer me on and meet me at the finish line. I even had enough energy at the end of the day to have a wee dance to the Red Hot Chilli Pipers with my beautiful 7-month year old granddaughter - she loved it. It was a great day and not even a little bit of rain could dampen our spirits!”

Taking part in the Kiltwalk was a significant milestone for, Lorraine, as she has dealt with her own health issues over the last few years.

She added: “Last year I had major surgery and I almost died. I wasn’t sure I was going to make through it, and having the conversation with my family was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Luckily, the operation was a huge success and I was up and on my feet in no time. I am so grateful to be here and I try to do what I can to help other people”.

Lorraine walked a total of 14.5 miles in 5 hours, and raised over £470.00 – an incredible effort that will go a long way in supporting The Haven’s mission to provide vital and sustainable services to the local community and to those who could benefit most from support.

Paul Hayward, Campaigns and Communications Officer for The Haven, said: “We rely on the generosity of individuals like Lorraine, local businesses and organisations who fundraise to help The Haven continue our work and make a real difference in the lives of those we support.

Lorraine is an incredible woman and a huge inspiration. We’re so grateful to her and everyone who very kindly made donations. Their kindness and generosity will make a significant impact, and we are so appreciative of their contribution to our cause”.

Paul added: “We would like to say THANK YOU Lorraine for her support The Haven – we appreciate everything you do!”
