HAVEN SUPPORTED CARER

Sometimes it is impossible to know the impact we have on one another's lives.

On this page you will find some numbers that begin to show our impact in the lives of individuals and families. You will also read something of their experiences in their own words.

Each one one of us has a unique and personal experience of journeying through life-limiting illness but we are convinced that it is better when we face the future together.

A carer's story

“I became a fulltime carer for my Dad in June 2020 after his health declined during the first period of lockdown. This has put me under a great amount of stress as I suffer from chronic pain as well as having mental health issues.   However having the support and compassionate care I have received from the Haven has helped me greatly. Knowing that I have a fortnightly video-call from someone who understands my situation and who can offer advice related to it has been a God send. I don’t like burdening my family and friends with all my woes, so having someone that’s listens without judgement has also been vital. As many of the mental health charities that I would usually attend have been closed during lockdown, my video-calls has been the only face to face connection from the 3rd sector that I have had. During our chats the nurse reminds me of my worth, the importance of self-care and not to be so hard on myself.  I was sent “Lifting your Spirits” a combination of CDs and booklet which contains 7 helpful tools for coping and “My Wellbeing Journal” which I absolutely love because it contains lots of uplifting quotes and mindful practices. I am so grateful for all the help I have received, The Haven has been a shining light for me during the dark uncertain times.”

A young person's story

“My life completely changed when my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer but The Haven gave me a place where I was able to talk honestly about how I was feeling.  They helped me through one of the hardest things that I’ve the ever had to face.  I’m grateful for all the help that they’ve given me.

A child's story

“I’ve loved it cause I’ve been able to just sit and talk to you about stuff and mum and that in a way that I couldn’t before with my gran.  Sometimes it’s been sad but I think I had to feel that to feel happy and I’ve loved the games and stuff we did.  It’s been one of the best things I’ve did.”
